About Ruffed Grouse

Description



Ruffed grouse primarily come in two color tones, each have white, but their second color is a reddish-brown or grey. Ruffed grouse stand out as the feathers around their neck flare out when they make displays. Females will sometimes raise the feathers on their crown as well.



Diet & Habitat



Grouse prefer berries and buds when available, in particular high and lowbush cranberry, blueberries, wild rose, aspen and willow buds.



Ruffed grouse are a popular game bird in the state.
