About Harbor Seal

Description

Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina) are brownish tan to gray. They can grow over 6 feet long and weigh up to 300 pounds and can live into their 30's. Females usually outlive males by an average of around 10 years often dying in their 20's.

Often times when spotting a Harbor Seal they float with their heads sticking out of the water, just above their noses. They observe you and silently slip under the water. It's fascinating to watch them watch you.

Diet & Habitat

Harbor Seals tend to prefer fish but also eat crabs, shrimp, and mollusks.

They are found throughout Southern Alaska, from the southern tips of Southeast Alaska out along the Aleutian Islands, rarely north into the Bearing Sea.
