Horned Puffin (Fratercula corniculata) are around a foot tall. Many tourist mistakenly call them penguins. The have white bellies and black backs, tails, and wings. Black extends up the back of the neck and over the top of their head. The sides of their heads are big white patches. They have large yellow beaks with red tips.
Horned Puffins can live to be over 20 years old.
Horned Puffins eat sandlance, capelin, greenling, cod, squid, and crustaceans. They swim underwater collecting food.
They're found around the Northern Pacific. The best places to see them in Alaska are out past Seward in Resurrection Bay, Cordova in Prince William Sound, Kodiak, and the Aleutian Islands.
Puffins begin breeding some time after 3 years old. They nest on rocky cliffs and steep slopes. The puffins will usually lay one egg and share in the incubation. Around 40 days of incubation the eggs hatches, 40 days later it's left to fend for itself.
